End of May 2012

My 28-105mm wasn't working properly .. 3 months ago.
Something inside was rattling.

Found the rattlers.

Now I need a new 28-105mm ...

Snow in the Rimutaka's has sent chilly southerly's our way and despite the sun shining all day today, the temperature was a constant 8°C. We're out of Milo (Shai eats it dry while I'm not looking), so used Cadbury's Caramel Chocolate. Add some vanilla essense to it and it will take away the hideous taste that is immitation caramel.

These mugs are older than me (33 25). They belonged to my great-grandmother and out of the set of 6 mugs and one jug .. there are only these two left.

Sided with Arnotts Crownes, which are WAY better that Griffins Toffee Pops.
For rizzle.
That's my passport application at the back there. Mine expired in January.
John Key, NZs Prime Minister who I voted for and am not sure why anymore, has decided that it's a great idea to restrict people with student loan debts from leaving the country until the loans are paid off, so .. no payment, no passport.

Perhaps more jobs in NZ would help sir? Then everyone wouldn't jump the ditch to Australia where there are jobs.
Before he puts that law in action ... I'll renew.
He also wants Restricted License holders to display R plates on their cars to make other motorists aware that R means, "Be careful, I'm a new driver". I'm ok with this potential new rule.

Larry, my Mum and my Aunty Vi(mums sister), are all the same age.
My Mum will be 53 on Friday. We thought of taking her out to dinner somewhere nice, but Larry reminded me that we all have a streak that stems from her. We're an anti-social bunch.
In her favor, I'm planning something at home with just us.
It requires candles and skewers.
She's the best Mum in the world and she is a-ok with freeloading offspring.

The 27th - Re: Larry

Weekend windup.

Sister & Jasiah.

Three monkeys.

Re: Larry
Received the confirmation letter that he's been refered to the cardiologist for the heart issue.
Still on Haemo.
Still awaiting a surgery date.
The worst part of the dialysis is the boredom, he says. Because he can't use the iPod that well (vision), the only solace he has apart from sleep, is when I call him to chat.
Thank goodness for cellphones .. and arificial kidneys.

Larell's 4th Birthday

My sister is a Drill Sergeant little neurotic.
She's been planning this birthday for about 2 months. I thought planning my weeks meals ahead of time was weird. I am a weakling in comparison.

The birthday girl. She's #2 of 4 kids born the same year just from my siblings.

This is the Dolly Varden cake the birthday was planned around. 3 choc german cakes dowelled together to form the skirt, between each layer was pink german cake frosting with my sisters signature marshmallow frosting on top. (I would have used buttercream).

If you were to ask Larry one thing that he remembered more than anything else during the worst times of his initial dialysis treatments during our 12 weeks stay in Auckland .. it would be this boys scream. He has grown up since then and only screams sometimes and not all the time.

The birthday girl with her Mum.

Trampoline kids.

The Pinata.

I forgot I was supposed to buy the candles and when we didn't have any this morning, I had fireworks all ready to go. Someone saved the day.

Inner cake.

Little Miss Horrible woke up half way through the celebrations and spent most of the time stealing soda's and popping balloons.

Good day.
Glad it's over.

Didn't make rugby today for 2 reasons. (MAC lost to Pirates 13-18 - not a bad score though)
1. The Birthday and
2. Something is up with my back and I feel like a 90 year old grandma slouched over in pain.
Postponed 2 photoshoots because of it.
Hello codeine.
Goodnight world.

Ham, Cheese & Broccoli empanadas.
A simple process.

I did not have the olive oil sauce they serve with empanadas at Mercado's BA, but these were great on their own.

This is my niece Rome.
She's named after my two aunties who raised me.
Rahunga Olive Marva Edwards.
Her parents wanted to name her Camilla originally, but I put in a formal complaint before her arrival so her middle name is Camilla .. it should have been Diablo, which Larry may argue is one in the same name.
She wanted a new name today, so she and Uncle Larry came up with one.
Unicorn Treehouse Tiny Toilet.
Unicorn looks alot like my Mum in these shots.

20/47 - Milanesa

Add some Italian seasoning to the bread crumbs for the Milanesa. Use thin sliced top sirloin.

1 minute in the deep fryer at 190°C is more than enough.

Larry said Argentines have a way with ruining a salad, so I went with tradition and sided this dish with a ruined salad, although I added Japanese Makoto dressing to my salad because if I wanted to eat an abomination I'd have my sister cook. (Love you. See you tomorrow kiss kiss).

Just as tasty as Mercados Buenos Aires!

Missing people.

I had a random morning this morning where I woke up and missed two people who haven't been apart of our lives for years. Not sure where the feeling came from, but I wondered how they were doing, if they are safe and if they are happy. I believe in beginning again, but I'm not sure the rest of the world agree.

It's just one of those days.
Very random.

Chocolate Self-Saucing Pudding. (19/47)

This is in the Edmonds cook book. I fancied it up by adding a melted chocolate & egg white concoction (souffle) to the mix just under the 'saucing' mixture.

The cake batter is heavy, but it springs to life while cooking.

Cake batter, souffle mix & sauce.

Edmonds tells you 30 minutes at 180°C, but because I added the souffle mix, it was 1.5 hours at 180 °C.

The sauce will seep to the bottom and steam the cake done while the souffle mixture in the middle cooks slowly, but surely, leaving a velvetty mess when you scoop it out to consume.
Perfect served hot with French Vanilla ice-cream.

The Edmonds Recipe
100g Butter (softened)
3/4 c sugar
1 egg
2 tsp vanilla
Sift together
2 tsp Baking Power
1 Tbsp Cocoa
1 1/4 c Flour
Fold into the cream mixture.

Place in cooking dish then set aside.

1/4 c cocoa
1/2 c brown sugar
1 Tbsp Corn Starch

Mix & sprinkle over the top of the batter.
Pour 2 cups of boiling water over the batter & sauce mixture using a spoon. (This distributes the water to the corn starch evenly and you avoid clumps of dry mix).

Bake for 30 minutes at 180°C which is rougly 356°F.

"If you can't beat em, join em".
When it's for a good cause and when it seems the right thing to do, I abide by that saying.
For two years I've been on and off about Nursing school. There are several cons, the biggest being time that I really don't have. The Pro? Since medicine is going to be apart of our lives for the rest of it, it just makes sense.

After a 5 page essay as to why I want to enroll, I start in Spring (August), and it's going to be OK.

In other news.
We're going Argentine this week for food. Mercados Buenos Aires was a restaurant we frequented in Van Nuys, they had the best empanadas. They also sold Havana Alfajores, which are fantastic.
We'll start off tonight with Milanesas.

Saturday Rugby

MAC lost to Hastings this afternoon. I prefer my rugby games where I'm gripping the camera lens in the event I jump up and down overwhelmed with excitement. There hasn't been much of that this season.
Hastings and MAC were, as of last week, even on the Total Competition Points table (18) with even wins - 4 each. They place 5th and 6th out of 10.
They ran out of steam today.

My nephew Jeston's game was this morning (MAC 7th grade).
Love the Junior Rugby shirts this year.

New Dialysis Unit.

Hawkes Bay Hospital is moving up in the world. Construction has started on a new diaylsis unit. As it is right now there are 3 parts for kidney patients, Dialysis Unit 1, Ballantyne House and the Renal House, and they're all on different parts of the hospital grounds so if you were to walk, you'd get lost. Example, the time the Renal House sent Larry to the dialysis unit from across the grounds and he was having a bad vision day and fell twice (this is what orderly's are paid for).

I'm excited about this because those 3 places have become apart of our lives and if anything, it creates a one-stop shop for renal patients. Every renal house visitor will agree that the right turn from Canning Rd onto Omahu Rd is a car wreck waiting to happen. The number of dialysis patients are rising in The Bay and it surprises me when I hear stories from our nurses about people who miss treatments and come in days or weeks later bloated and feeling like crap. It's laziness and people, especially my polynesian compadres, who just don't listen. Another example. Dude hadn't been in for 3 weeks to dialyze. He appeared after 3 weeks for what should have been a 5 hour treatment, asked to leave early because he was dying for a smoke .. dropped dead when he got home. True story.

This is why I'm absolutely anal about Larry not missing a day and we have had several heated discussions when, on the odd day, he wakes up and tells me he just "doesn't feel like going today" .. right .. I don't feel like being a widow when we have the means to delay death.

I have a great appreciation for the dialysis nurses/technicians at the Hawkes Bay Hospital who put up with people who waste their time.

Off topic.
We send big big loves to the family in New Mexico. Larry's step-dad Hal passed last week and they'll be celebrating his life in a send off this weekend. As my aunty said a week before she died, "I had good innings".
Hal did too. He did everything!
Via Con Dios Hal!

18/47 - Southern style chicken

You gotta have mashed potatoes with your Southern Food .. sprinkle in some hickory spice.

The secret is in the batter. Mine in particular was eggs, buttermilk, BBQ Sauce (Rich & Sassy by Famous Daves), Worchestershire & steak sauce.

Always use tenderloin.

The dry mix also has several herbs & spices, but for the life of me I can't remember them.

Deep fry at 190 celsius for 6 minutes.

When you don't have handy towels to drain the oil, use bread.

The chicken was silky.
The hickory spice in the mashed potatoes was an unfamiliar taste, but it worked.
The white pepper gravy was the cherry on the top.
